Information of interest about driver licenses and ID Cards

FULL IMPLEMENTATION OF “REAL ID” BEGINS: The Federal REAL ID Act of 2005 sets new standards for the issuance of driver licenses and identification cards. This is a nationwide initiative effort to improve the integrity and security of State-issued driver licenses and identification cards that will be fully implemented in Florida starting January 1, 2010.

Your current Florida license or ID card will continue to be valid as identification for federal purposes until it expires or until December 1, 2014 for individuals born after December 1, 1964 and until December 1, 2017 for everyone else. Convenience methods of renewing your driver license or identification card online or by mail will continue to be available to those who qualify.

You must visit an office only:
· If you are applying for your first driver license or identification card;
· When your current credential expires and you have already used the one-time "convenience" renewal option;
· If you legally change your name (e.g.: by marriage or divorce). For office visits, you must bring original documents that prove your identity, social security number and residential address.

GATHER GO GET: DHSMV continues its educational campaign GatherGoGet dedicated to assist Floridians with new driver license and identification card requirements. Floridians renewing or obtaining a new license or ID are required to show proof of: 1) identification, 2) Social Security number and 3) residential address (two items).

The campaign’s website is designed to help residents understand the new requirements. DHSMV encourages all Floridians to gather your documents, go to a driver license office and get your new card. The website,
www.GatherGoGet.com, will enable residents to:
Determine when they will need to visit a driver license or tax collector office.
Create a personalized checklist detailing documents they will need.
Obtain contact information showing where to get required documents.
Browse a list of driver license offices in their local area.

The campaign and its tools are also available in Spanish at
www.ReunaVengaObtenga.com and in Creole at www.RasanbleAlePran.com.

On January 2010, the Department will begin issuing driver licenses and identification cards that meet new federal standards. Although Florida already has one of the most secure issuance processes and credentials, these changes will enhance our efforts to minimize fraud and identity theft.

TEEN SAFE DRIVING OUTREACH: The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles teamed up with Ford Motor Company’s Driving Skills for Life, a program that was created in 2003 in conjunction with the Governors Highway Safety Association to provide teens with the skills and experience to become better drivers. Parents were welcome to participate. The two-day event was held at the Homestead Speedway as part of the activities leading to the Ford 400 NASCAR race.

Students received hands-on advance driver’s training by some of the nation’s top professionals driving instructors. Participants learned techniques in the four key skill areas: speed management, space management, vehicle handling and hazard recognition. Experts have identified the lack of these skills to be the cause of approximately 60 percent of crashes for newly licensed drivers ages 16-19. Vehicle crashes are the number one killer of teens in America.

A safe driving presentation to the students by Florida Highway Patrol troopers was an integral part of the driving program. Driver license examiners were also at hand to answer questions from teens and parents and to distribute information on safe driving. Colin Braun, 20-year-old NASCAR Camping World Truck Series driver teamed up with Ford Driving Skills for Life to promote the importance of safe driving and to meet the participants at the Homestead Speedway driver training camp.
